To raise money for Saint Vincent de Paul, our school went bag packing in the Dunnes Stores in both Cournelscourt, and Newtown Mount Kennedy. Of those of us who signed up for the bag packing, about 80-90% attended the Dunnes in Cournelscourt whilst myself and 4 others helped out in the Dunnes in Newtown.
On the morning of the bag packing, Friday the 13th of October, I got some breakfast in ‘The Parkview Hotel’ with my mate Tadhg. After that we went to Dunnes Stores and met up with our supervisor for the day. We were given the SVP bibs and started there and then. After an hour our shift ended for a break. Due to there only being a maximum of 2-3 tills available for bag packing at any given time, Tadhg and I took one hour shifts on and off from 11 am - 4pm while another group of 3 came on to bag pack whilst we were on our break.
Down the road from Dunnes there were a couple of small shops and a cafe where we got some lunch. When we weren’t on a break, we were bag packing. The day started off slowly. Customers came in, in a slow and steady stream until the 1 o’clock rush. 1 pm marked the end of the school day for 4 year olds and younger. It got very busy very fast and at times it was hard to keep up. Thankfully the school rush ended. It was all smooth sailing from there on out for a while.
Not too long after the 1pm rush, came the 3pm mayhem, primary school had just finished. The numbers were double those of the 1pm rush, but it was manageable in the end.
Overall the day was a good experience and the fact that between the Newtown Dunnes, and the Cournelscourt Dunnes, we managed to raise over €2000. So that really was the cherry on top.
