Science Week runs nationally from the 13th November to the 17th November 2017. On the Tuesday of that week, those who were interested, from 4th year, took part in a small competition.
Either alone or with a team, we had half an hour to create a ‘device,’ made from pipe cleaners, paper, tape, etc… that would transport 2 marbles along a ‘zipwire.’
I teamed up with Conor for this challenge and I believe we came up with a good strategy. We took the card paper and turned it into a small basket. Using tape we strengthened the structure. We used a layer of tin foil so that the 2 marbles wouldn’t roll out of the basket. We then attached a piece of pipe cleaner to the card basket. We attached a paper clip to the top of the pipe cleaner to act as a hook.
All that was left was to try it out. We placed the ‘device’ on the wire and….. It went 69cm and then it stopped… Not very impressive. At first we thought of this as a ad score, then in the end we came second, with first place only being 1.4cm ahead of us.
So at the end of the day we didn’t win, but sure it was just a bit of fun.
